🦎About Me🦎

Ayo, my name is Ulysses.

I’m an audio designer specialising in

creative practice and design.

I’ve been playing all types of games most of my life and attended university to study Game Design and Music composition for my undergraduate degree. When I finished I decided to double down on studying design as a Master of Arts in Digital Arts because of the value I saw in creating cohesive artistic experiences. I took up game audio as a career path as a means of merging my ever expansive interests in all things experiential play and sound crafting.

As far as my interests go, I enjoy anything with a sci-fi, surreal, anime, mechanical, or with stylised feel to it. Additionally I always enjoy game experiences inspired by empathetic interpersonal relationships with the people, objects or places.

Most of my creative discipline and expertise comes from being a designer who uses audio rather than strictly an audio expert. To me sound design speaks to a universe of interconnected ideas around creativity, technical expertise and process. Simply expressed, I think sound design is creative intention and story telling delivered within a context. Audio doesn’t exist to simply be heard but can be crafted to support or lead a variety of situations and aesthetics. Sounds can be over the top, highly detailed or superficially designed. The importance in any of these decisions lies in the context and direction of the artistic and technical team.

As of late I’ve found my strengths and interests as a sound designer rooted in:

  • synthesis as a creative and technical practice
  • voice design as it occurs as an intelligible and unintelligible character expression
  • tonally expressive or stylised sound design
  • finally the research and conceptualisation of sonic ideas.

I was born in Zambia and raised in South Africa. I’m a big style and clothing enthusiast. I can talk about silhouettes, the history of functionality morphing into form, the emotion of a colour pallete and shoes design for ages. I love reptiles and more specifically lizards. I practice martial arts in the style of RyuKyuKobujutsu.  I have an unhealthy and uncontained obsession with music around hip hop sampling and certain styles of electronic music.
