Greetings, my name is Ulysses. 

I am an audio designer specialising in creative practice and design.

Although I’ve been playing games religiously throughout my life, my creative ambitions started in university. During my time at uni I pursued an undergraduate degree in performing and visual arts. My majors started with Game Design and Music Composition, and I eventually graduated with a Masters in Digital Arts. Throughout my academic career, I came to realise that sound design fulfilled key interests that I had as a game developer. That is combining the design sense of crafting player-driven experiences/storytelling/aesthetics with a life long curiosity in audio production.

At this point in my career I’m eager to deepen my understanding of working in team environments and aesthetic styles of sound design. I am not one to back down from a task while still being confident in where my core talent and interests lie to deliver the best results to a project.

As far as my interests go I enjoy anything sci-fi, surreal, anime, mechanical, exploring stylised visuals or focused on empathetic interpersonal relationships with the people, objects or places in our shared human experience.

Most of my creative discipline and expertise comes from being a designer who uses audio rather than strictly someone who exists as an audio expert. To me sound design speaks to a universe of things related to creativity, technical expertise and process. It is more simply expressed creative intention and story telling delivered within a context. Audio doesn’t exist to simply be heard but can be crafted to support or lead a variety of situations and aesthetics. Sounds can be over the top, they can be sombre, or superficially designed. The importance in any of these decisions lies in the context and direction of the artistic and technical team.

 

As of late I’ve found my strengths and interests as a sound designer are rooted in synthesis as a creative and technical practice, voice design as it occurs as an intelligible and unintelligible character expression, tonally expressive or stylised sound design and finally the research and conceptualisation of sonic ideas.

Mm, lets see, I was born in Zambia and raised in South Africa. My family name is Saili but I prefer Ulysses amongst my friends and colleagues. I’ve had a few nicknames I’ve introduced myself as over the years and on the internet. I’m a big style and clothing enthusiast. I can talk about silhouettes, colour matching and shoes for ages. I love reptiles and more specifically lizards. I am a purple belt in Ryukyu Kobujutsu. A martial art developed in Okinawa based on open hand karate and weapons training. I have an unhealthy but necessary obsession with music around hip hop sampling and rapping, poppy dance music and electronic music production styles. I’ll die if I do not listen 🤷 .
